Ficus Carica - Black Mission Fig on sale
Somehow figs seem an earthy fruit - they are certainly something special when you break one open - the fruit is actually a "congested" flower! Wait patiently until the fruit has ripened - then enjoy your sweet, aromatic fig.
We have two to three year old ficus carica - this is a fast growing tree, with a mat-like root system - beware. Very attractive - shapely. The fruit drop is messy around harvest.
Ficus carica without any specific name is a common fig - our current stock is probably Black Mission (an 80 yr old gardener gave me the tree over 15 yrs ago). I grow this in my own yard and it makes a dark brown fig that is quite tasty. The inner pulp is rose-tinted when ripe. Milewide has recently acquired ficus carica "Turkish" and ficus carica "afghanistanica" mothers, but we won't have cuttings ready for a year or two. They are both known to be hardy.
