Nigra mandshurica hydrangea cultivar Purple stemmed beauties! One of the hydrangea cultivars that has dark purple stems, the nigra mandshurica hydrangea will do well in zones 7 to 9. In the worst case (25 degrees), they will die down to the ground and sprout up fresh growth in the spring. You want to provide dappled shade and plenty of water. This cultivar will take a globular shape about 6-8 feet across and the same high. Deadhead the flowers and you will get more. Trim the plant briskly in the fall for good fresh growth in the spring. You can control the hydrangea flower color yourself - color is determined not by soil PH, but by aluminum content - the PH only unlocks the aluminum (acid blooms blue & alkaline blooms pink flowers). These plants can provide alot of pleasure. |
